Banjo

Jeff Scroggins is an internationally known performer, composer and teacher who has taken his fiery banjo style to stages around the world. He began his career by winning numerous contests and awards, including the prestigious National Bluegrass Banjo Championship, as well as dozens of state, regional and local banjo contests. Jeff has recorded and performed with many of the top names in bluegrass and beyond. Jeff’s reputation as a teacher has him in demand at bluegrass music camps in the US and abroad, and he taught for years at the Swallow Hill Music School in Denver, Colorado. His band, “Jeff Scroggins and Colorado” tours extensively both nationally and internationally, and it features some of the finest bluegrass talent today.

Arranging and Improvising strategies for bluegrass banjo  – This class will focus on increasing your understanding of the fret board and then explore techniques and strategies for using that understanding to “spice up” your playing. We will look at how to make your playing more interesting through more melodic movement in both soloing and backup while emphasizing the importance of focusing on the melody. We will also discuss tips, ideas and exercises for improving both left and right hand technique. This will be a “hands on” class; written materials will be provided and the class will spend a lot of time playing through the materials together and discussing the materials provided.

Mandolin

At 23 Tristan Scroggins already has a decade of professional experience as a stage performer, instructor and recording artist. Tristan has won a number of mandolin contests and awards; in 2017, Tristan was awarded the Instrumental Momentum Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association and was also a participant in the Acoustic Music Seminar run by Mike Marshall as part of the Savannah Music Festival. In addition to performing Tristan has taught mandolin at many workshops and camps throughout the US and Canada,  In 2017 his  duet CD  with San Francisco based violinist Alisa Rose entitled “Grana” was released. It features improvised arrangements of original tunes and bluegrass classics, along with elements of classical music and it captures  the amazing musical chemistry between the pair.

Fele

A native of Portland, Oregon, Ellie Hakanson grew up playing in her family band, where she learned to sing and arrange harmonies, and developed a passion for bluegrass music. Ellie Joined Jeff Scroggins and Colorado in 2015 and has quickly become well known as a powerful singer and fiddler. In 2016 Ellie was the Arizona State Old Time Fiddle Champion as well as the Rockygrass Fiddle Champion. In 2017 the IBMA took notice and nominated Ellie for their Horizon Award in the instrumental category. Ellie has toured extensively with the band in the past 3 years, and she has taught at a number of bluegrass camps.

Gitar- UTSOLGT

Greg Blake grew up in southwest West Virginia, and when he sings, you can hear a voice that connects to the great old generations of mountain singers, invested with a rich twang and the kind of eerily powerful cry that first inspired the ‘high, lonesome sound.’ Greg has been awarded SPBGMA Midwest’s Guitar Player of the Year, and was twice nominated for their Male Vocalist award. Greg’s critically acclaimed CD, “Songs of Heart and Home” was released in 2016 with a cast that includes John Reischman, Mark Schatz, Blaine Sprouse, Jeff Scroggins and Sally Van Meter, who also produced the project. Greg is a regular at bluegrass camps in the US and Canada.

Kontrabass
Spry, energetic and coming to you from the Albertan Prairies of Canada, Nico Humby is a bass player and singer who’s dipped his fingers in a multitude of genres ranging from R&B, Funk, and Swing to Folk, Bluegrass, and Classic Country. With this experience he is able to bring a new groove and flavor to the existing world of Bluegrass. He is currently a member of the Greg Blake Band, is a lead member of the group Nomad Jones along with his father, and has been the front man of Funk Velvet since its beginning in 2010.

In this class we will tackle the many difficulties of this mighty beast while focusing on tone, taste and timing. We will cover two-time feel, waltzes, walks and runs over traditional bluegrass songs and learn to play them in whatever key necessary. We will also take a look at how to approach soloing, how to sing while playing, and if people want, how to slap. Bring your bass and get ready to play! The class will mostly consist of hands on playing. Feel free to bring your recording devices to record classes. There will be a couple of hand-outs but we will mostly learn by ear.

Vokal

Vocal workshop
Paul Kirby (USA) is a resident of Norway and a trained classical singer with Masters Degrees in Opera Performance (Boston University) and Management (BI Oslo).  His interest in traditional American music goes back to his youth on his parents’ farm in central Illinois where he spent time between cuttings of hay teaching himself how to play the guitar and later the banjo. After years singing classical music across Europe, he returned to the music of his youth: the fiddle tunes and songs of Appalachia.

In addition to his active classical singing and teaching, he leads the Oslo-based bluegrass band Moving Day! He is a permanent member of the Norwegian Soloists Choir, enjoys an active career as an arts management consultant, and relishes the opportunity to perform with Americana groups The Expats and Feleboga.
